It takes some efforts to make a house a home. It doesn’t matter if you live in your own house or a rented house, you can create a cosy and homey feeling in both. For a rented property it doesn’t have to be expensive. There are things you can do to make your renter property feel like your own home and in case of moving out, you can take them with you.

Many people don’t see a point in personalising their rented homes, especially if they don’t plan on staying there for a long time. But it’s always nice to make your house feel like a home.

There are things you can do to personalise a rented house without going overboard or investing too much money. You can do so by applying these five rules. And they are all things that you can take with yourself when you move out.

1. Add rugs. They can make any room much cosier and your rug can be the focal point of the room. Just because your house is rented it does not mean that it shouldn’t be stylish and show your character.

2. Add plants. They liven up every room, make it feel like a home, and clear the air.

3. Hang your art. Ask for permission to patch some holes in the wall. And do not overdo it. Hang a few statement pieces of art, the other ones can go on shelves. You don’t even have to buy expensive art, you can have some DIY art on the walls.

4. Avoid wallpaper at all costs, unless you ask about it. It is easier to repaint the walls or add a few stripes of colour than to use wallpapers. They are difficult to glue and even more difficult to remove. However, there are alternatives to wallpapers that you can use. Wall stickers are an affordable and an efficient way to decorate your walls without much effort.

5. Accessories. Add your own statement lighting. Floor lamps or desk lamps are quite stylish. You can emphasise your taste in decor and colours with a few throw cushions on the sofa and the bed even.

6. If you need additional pieces of furniture – invest in flat packs. They are affordable and easy to transport. The flat packs can be assembled and disassembled if you have to move out, so you can take them with you.

Talk to your landlord before doing anything major, such as replacing things. Sometimes people get surprised at their landlord’s reaction. Very often landlords are even happy that you will refresh their property and might give you, even more, ideas and freedom!
